Lyrics
You like to think we play on a team where people look out for each other
Human nature is loving and trusting, we help our neighbors and pull together
And so we lift each other up, generation after generation
A huge and growing human family, built on affirmation
But that’s all just for appearances because underneath it all
We are fearful of each other, paranoid, kill or be killed, only one step from a homicidal brawl
You don’t know what you’re talking about. At our core, we are innocent and kind.
But as we grow, jaded people like you twist that goodness to a corrupt state of mind.
You think we start out hating each other, but anyone who’s had children knows
That they want to love from the outset, and their humanity just grows and grows
We may see the world in terms of fear and hate, but underneath it all
We want connection, love, & belonging with each other, just like the world was when we were just small
It doesn’t matter if we’re good or not, nor does our choice of nomenclature
The world is indifferent, doesn’t care a flip about our so-called “human” nature.
Ice ages, volcanoes and earthquakes, floods and disasters, natural selection
The world goes on, with us or without us, following its own direction
We can argue about human nature, but underneath it all
Our concerns are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things; they are utterly and simply banal
