From the recording Transit
Lyrics
There was a time when my act was extremely well-rehearsed
Then I discovered that the scenes had been reversed
Day was still day and the night was still the cheerless night
But to my surprise the left had now become the right
As my view became clearer and clearer
I realized that I had stepped straight through a mirror
To a space that was queerer and queerer
And the truth came progressively nearer
I came to understand I’d been stuck in a staged tableau
What if the face in the mirror is someone you just don’t know?
How do you make sense of that baffling disconnection?
Maybe perceive the world inside your own reflection.
My perspective got clearer and clearer
After I went through that inscrutable mirror
In a space that was queerer and queerer
The truth moved progressively nearer
As I made my way I felt that I might be as mad as a hatter
But after reflection I realized that maybe it just didn’t matter
On the one hand, everything felt like I was a total stranger
But on the other hand, my soul was no longer in danger
My perspective got clearer and clearer
After I passed through that fortunate mirror
In a space that was queerer and queerer
The truth got progressively nearer
