  1. Country

From the recording Transit

Lyrics

Born in the country, in a little hospital that my grannie built
In the great depression
I was taught the golden rule Live your life and let others live
respect their self-determination

Neighbor to neighbor
A point I won’t belabor
But something’s really changed since then and now

I observe this with my own two eyes
A thought I’d like to emphasize
I don’t recognize that country now

Raised in the country, Taught to love my neighbors
Even in their eccentricity
We knew a fellow buried some cars nose down in dirt
and we celebrated his creativity

Neighbor to neighbor
A point I won’t belabor
Something’s surely changed since then and now.

I observe this with my own two eyes
Not a thing you’d publicize but I don’t recognize that country now

We trusted experts, listened to our elders
Could have a disagreement while we argued with civililty
Believed in education and performed our civic duty
No one I knew stood above the law

Neighbor to neighbor
A point I must belabor
I know that something’s changed since then and now.

I observe this with my own two eyes
Folks you choose to ostracize, and I don’t recognize that country now

Church bells rang to celebrate Jonas Salk’s vaccine for polio
We cheered in the street at the fall of the Berlin wall
Country kids were in 4H, head heart hands and health
But now we hate our neighbors above all

Neighbor to neighbor
A point I must belabor
Everything has changed since then and now.

I've observed this with my own two eyes
I guess it’s time to eulogize since I don’t recognize that country now

I don’t recognize that country now.
